Francis Stone’s letter itself — a letter that is critical of our justification, planning for, and execution of the war in Iraq. I fully agree with the colonel’s critique of the war and with his view that “military people, on active duty and retired, should abandon the tradition of silence in the face of wrong-headed civilian decisionmaking.” I fully expect that his comments and my comments will draw a large number of perhaps very critical responses. That is good, and MOAA and Military Officer should not shy away from promoting and documenting such a debate. I just hope that in such a debate, neither the patriotism nor the support for our troops on the part of those who are critical of the conduct of the war will be at issue. Suffice to say that those of us who have served our country honorably for 20 or more years are patriots and as such are deeply thankful for and respectful of our fellow patriots who are in harm’s way today.
