Military Officer - April 2007 - (Page 19) Ready. Aim. Retire. wonder what has happened to the great guys I shared the duty with and how many of us are still alive? Thanks for some wonderful recollections. CWO Shel Miller, USA-Ret. Atlanta Battlefields and Conflict I read with interest [“Battlefields of the Great War,” January 2007]. My husband and I in fact met on a tour of the Somme. As a Briton, though, I do feel that Major Robinson’s opening statement needs a little qualification. He says the AEF’s 2nd Division “won some of the most important and most bloody battles of World War I.” Had he added, “involving American troops,” he would have been completely accurate; without it, it falls into the trap of sounding like claiming undue prowess. Any British, French, Commonwealth, Russian, or even German people reading his words would point to such clashes as Verdun, the Somme, or the Dardanelles campaign; quote casualty figures; and mutter uncomplimentary words about American troops. By qualifying the sentence, you would prevent this and not interfere with the accepted truth that the intervention of fresh American troops and war credits did indeed force Imperial Germany to seek an Armistice.
