S New Beginnings oldiers of a 600-man battalion from the Afghan National Army’s 201st Corps competed to be in the country’s first unit to undergo commando training. The battalion — led by Afghan National Army Lt. Col. Muhammad Farid Ahmadi — was selected because of its unparalleled esprit de corps, say U.S. officials. Soldiers who pass the evalution will receive six months of training in Jordan. The soldiers were evaluated on marksmanship, a timed 3-mile run, push-ups, situps, and a rucksack foot march in full battle gear. Of the 600 soldiers, 100 passed the evaluation and will receive specialized training in Jordan for six months. “With this new training, good equipment, and designation as a commando battalion, we will play a greater role in the future, the stability, and [the] security of the region,” says Ahmadi. An important part of developing commando capability is training NCOs who can go back and train others. Each of the five corps in the Afghan army eventually will have a commando unit assigned, and the 201st Corps soldiers will train those units.
