I DoD Contracts for More MRAPs D oD has let contracts for an additional 2,400 mine-resistant, ambush-protected (MRAP) vehicles, bringing the total number of the vehicles ordered as of early November 2007 to just under half the current requirement of 15,274. The MRAP is designed to survive blasts from improvised explosive devices and improvised explosive projectiles — the main cause of death and injury to American servicemembers in Iraq. The contracts to produce the additional 2,400 MRAPs are with International Military and Government LLC, Force Protection Industries Inc., and BAE Systems Land and Armaments LP. The contracts are for both Category 1 and Category 2 MRAPs. Category 1 vehicles have four wheels and carry a crew of two and four passengers. Category 2 vehicles have six wheels and carry a crew of two and eight passengers. Separate Marine Corps and Army versions of the vehicles mean 16 variants must be equipped, tested, and produced. Despite being ahead on MRAP production, experts are working to reduce the number of variants to allow for more efficient production times. M 26 MILITARY OFFICER APRIL 2008 Month of the Military Child ilitary life can be stressful for servicemembers and their spouses. It’s important to remember military children can be affected as much as their parents. To pay tribute to military children for their unconditional support of their servicemember parents, Connect And Join celebrates April 2008 as Month of the Military Child. This year, MOAA is sponsoring Take Your Child To Work Day as part of the celebration. Connect And Join encourages the use of art, crafts, and scrapbooking to serve as a positive outlet for military children, who often experience a variety of emotions during a parent’s deployment.
