Military Officer - May 2006 - (Page 12) yourviews “I’m willing to bet the Marine sniper … will be squeezing the trigger, … not pulling it.“ — Col. Robert J. Powers, USAF-Ret. already there, bases nearby, lots of water, friendly people, etcetera — we couldn’t see traveling back to see [our children] and our (hoped-for) grandkids. Then again, getting away from your children might be the best reason for relocating — a factor in either case. Capt. Tim J. Dull, USN-Ret. Virginia Beach, Va. Medicare and TRICARE Did I miss something? … On page 81 [“By the Numbers,” March 2006], in the section “Your 60s,” [Marsha Bertrand] states, “as a retired officer you remain eligible for TRICARE health benefits until age 65, when Medicare kicks in.” I believe this is incorrect. I am 76 years old and receive health benefits from TRICARE. CWO3 Albert J. Fabbre, USN-Ret. Ludlow, Mass. Retirement Choices I was amazed that the article on retirement living in the March 2006 issue would include an endorsement for San Francisco as a “top pick” for military retirees. Based on the actions of the city council to reject the USS Iowa as a memorial and the statements by representatives of the city that the country doesn’t really need a military of any kind, it is difficult to come up with any compelling reason to consider San Francisco as a choice for a military retiree, unless you just want to pay more to live there than just about any other location. Maj. James R. Hannon, USMC-Ret. via e-mail cacti, their arms upright in perpetual greeting, expand beyond horizons” in the Mojave Desert. That is true about saguaro cacti, but they are not found in the Mojave Desert. They are only found in the Sonoran Desert in south-central Arizona and northern Mexico and grow nowhere else. It’s true that we have great weather, but it’s generally the absence of weather (visible moisture, i.e., clouds, rain, fog, snow) that makes living in southern Arizona so great. Maj. John Schaefer, USAF-Ret. Glendale, Ariz. Editor’s note: After age 65, Medicare does kick in for military retirees. But such retirees also come under TRICARE For Life, a second payer to Medicare. Win Some, Lose Some Finally, after years of reading articles focused almost solely on retirees, [I see that] Military Officer is now providing articles of interest to active duty officers. The March 2006 edition with the cover story “One Clean Shot” and articles about RVing and 529 plans is certainly a move in the right direction. Keep it up, and I’m sure your subscriber and membership base will continue to grow. CWO4 Jason Wood, USA Fort Knox, Ky. [Regarding “Destination: Arizona,” March 2006]: The Mojave Desert is mostly in California and southern Nevada. Very little of it exists in northwestern Arizona. One factor that was left out of the discussion of best places to move to was the one that caused us to rethink moving to our second home and planned retirement location of Charleston, S.C.: Our kids bought homes and settled into careers right here [in Virginia Beach, Va.]. While Charleston has all the best reasons for moving — lower cost of living, good friends Just wondering why so many articles in Military Officer are combat-related
