C ol. Brad Smith, USA, will hike the Appalachian Trail with the goal of raising $1 million for MOAA’s American Patriot Scholarship Fund. In December 2004, Smith was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer. Doctors have called your battle with cancer a medical miracle. How do you account for that? I’ve kept my attitude positive throughout, even on the worst days. I’ve taken charge of the things I can control such as rest, exercise, nutri- tion, and morale. And I’ve been lucky with the best medical care available. Why make such a strenuous trek? I have always had the dream of hiking the Appalachian Trail. Working toward that goal throughout my battle with cancer has been tremendously therapeutic. Why did you pick the scholarship fund? Many of our troops who are deployed in hostile theaters have given their lives. I wanted to help the families left behind. This scholarship fund will allow their children to go to college. Has your military training helped you fight cancer? The fighting spirit has served me well. The ability to focus on a goal, whether it be fighting cancer or taking on the hike, has come so naturally to me. How can readers support your cause? They can make a pledge through MOAA’s Web site at www .moaa.org/at. — Ellen Woods They’ll Match It! T oday’s retail landscape, with giant retailers offering lower and lower prices, has posed a challenge to military exchanges. Now with the Army and Air Force Exchange Service’s (AAFES’) “We’ll Match It!” campaign, if customers see a price differential of less than $10 they can tell the cashier, who will match it on the spot. Customers who report a price difference greater than $10 need only to bring a current local competitor’s ad to receive the reduced price. AAFES also offers a 30-day price guarantee on any item originally purchased from AAFES and subsequently sold at a lower price by AAFES or another local competitor (excluding unauthorized dealers and warehouse clubs). Purchases from the exchange generate funds for much needed Morale, Welfare, and Recreation programs. In 2004, AAFES contributed more than $242 million in support of youth activities, outdoor recreation, and other programs on military installations worldwide.
