The Chinese attack came amid brutal winter weather, with bitter Siberian winds lashing down from the northwest. By Dec. 1, 1950, a superior Chinese force had surrounded Gray’s division. Gray, wounded in the hand and both legs by a Chinese grenade, refused medical evacuation, electing to remain with his soldiers. But, as his battalion joined in an attempt to break out of the encirclement, Gray was ordered to ride on a convoy vehicle with other wounded servicemembers. After traveling four miles, Gray’s convoy was halted at about 4 p.m. by murderous fire from a roadblock. The Chinese created chaos and inflicted many casualties on the Americans. Gray took charge. According to Army records, “though hardly able to walk and suffering greatly from his wounds,” he rallied soldiers and “fearlessly led them up high ground against hostile Chinese emplacements.” PHOTO: HAROLD DORWIN/SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION rage By Fred L. Borch and Robert F. Dorr Gray and the soldiers captured a part of the enemy’s perimeter. Realizing that he lacked sufficient strength to hold the position, Gray then went back “through barrages of vicious fire, returned [to] the bottom of the hill, organized another group of men, and again charged the enemy, routing them from their strong points.” For his leadership and heroism, Gray was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross. He retired as a colonel in 1974 and lives in North Carolina. Navy Cross Capt. Charles Rush, USN-Ret. On Nov. 11, 1943, Charles Rush was a junior officer on the submarine USS Billfish (SS-286). The sub was cruising in the Japanese-controlled Makassar Strait at a depth of 45 feet when an enemy destroyer spotted it. As Rush recalled in a 2002 interview, he informed the inexperienced skipper that if the Billfish did not dive immediately, “We’re dead.” After some discussion, the submarine dove to 200 feet.
