T he personal copy of the speech George Washington delivered when he resigned from the Continental Army in 1783 — considered a landmark in history for establishing military subservience to civil authority — now belongs to the state of Maryland. Maryland ofﬁcials spent about two years acquiring the document from the family that has held it since the address was given. The document is worth an estimated $1.5 million. The state paid about $600,000 for the document, with donations from the family and two Baltimore philanthropists. He had cancer. Bauer won two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star for heroism in World War II. He helped the Yankees win nine World Series and later managed the Baltimore Orioles to their ﬁrst Series victory. Bauer, born in East St. Louis, Ill., had joined a pipe-ﬁtter’s union and begun a career in baseball when Pearl Harbor was attacked. He joined the Marines and spent nearly three years of the war in the South Paciﬁc as a combat platoon leader, receiving wounds in Guam and Okinawa. After the war, a Yankees scout remembered him, and Bauer soon joined the team.
