Spotlight Fallen Hero D uring his military career, CWO3 John A. Quinlan served eight years as an avionics specialist with the Marine Corps and 10 years as a warrant officer with the Army. Most recently, he served with B Company, 2nd Battalion, 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne) at Fort Campbell, Ky. He received 27 military medals during his career, which was cut short Feb. 18 in southeastern Afghanistan when his helicopter crashed. “We didn’t realize his circle was so huge. He touched so many people and accomplished so much,” says Quinlan’s mother, Kate. His father, Robert, a retired Army major, recalls that one of the most touching moments in the wake of his son’s death came when three soldiers at Fort Campbell relayed to him through tears how his son had saved their lives. In July 2006, Quinlan skillfully landed his Chinook helicopter after it had been shot down by an enemy rocket-propelled grenade. “He saved the lives of all 25 on the helicopter, and for his skill and heroism, he received the Distinguished Flying Cross,” says Robert. Quinlan served in five conflicts since 1990, including two tours in Operation Iraqi Freedom and five tours in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. He died a true military hero, says Robert, “and he was a hero to his family as well.” Quinlan is survived by his wife, Julie, and three daughters. “When John was home at Fort Campbell, the girls loved it when their dad would fly his helicopter over the backyard when they were out playing,” says Robert. “During the holidays, John and his family stayed in a hotel near us. He took the girls swimming in the indoor pool. They were squealing and cheering as he did cannonballs high enough to splash the ceiling,” recalls Robert. — Ellen N.
