Military Officer - June 2007 - (Page 67) The very first tank, the British Mark I, made its combat debut September 1916; (left) a Mark I is visible behind and to the left of a French Renault FT-17 light tank. Then-Lt. Col. George S. Patton led Renaults in World War I. A British Mark III or Mark IV (center) was photographed in action during World War I. During World War II’s North African campaign, an American M-3 Grant (right) churns through the Tunisian mud. After a day of gunnery training, a platoon of M-1A1 Abrams (previous spread) is silhouetted against the night sky. was “to facilitate the uninterrupted advance of the riflemen in the attack.” The Army determined two categories of tanks — light and medium — could fulfill all missions. The light tank would weigh less than 5 tons and be transportable by truck. The medium tank would not exceed 15 tons. By the standards being introduced by Britain, France, and Germany at the time, these vehicles, armed with 20 and 37 mm cannon, were lightweights. Despite worldwide advances in design and tactics through the 1930s, American armor was less robust and less capable than the armor fielded by other world powers — especially Germany. Germany’s stunning defeat of Poland in September 1939 and its rapid conquest of the Low Countries and France a few months later sent all powers, including the U.S., scrambling. Warfare had changed again, and for the second time in a generation the tank, brilliantly employed in the German Blitzkreig, was in the lead. Tank proponents throughout the Army openly recommended the formation of actual armored divisions. Symbolic of U.S. armor at the start of the war were the M-3 Grant and Lee tanks, often depicted in newsJUNE 2007 PHOTOS: FROM LEFT, U.S. ARMY SIGNAL CORPS/TIME & LIFE PICTURES/GETTY IMAGES; U.S. ARMY SIGNAL CORPS/TIME & LIFE PICTURES/GETTY IMAGES; ELIOT ELISOFON/TIME & LIFE PICTURES/GETTY IMAGES MILITARY OFFICER 67
