rapidfire Surfing the Web A Keeping the Memory ccording to an AARP report, the proportion of Internet users age 50 and older has almost tripled from 19 percent in 1998 to 54 percent in 2006. Use among those ages 50-64 has risen from 31.3 per- T he World War II Memorial was dedicated in Washington, D.C., May 2004. During its construction, the American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC) introduced an online World War II Registry to document the participants in history’s largest and most devastating war. Americans who served in the armed forces or contributed to the war effort on the home front may register. The registry, which contains more than 2 million records, includes National Archives and Records Administration lists of those killed in World War II and the names of those buried in ABMC overseas cemeteries or listed on its Tablets of the Missing. Placing a name in the registry is free, and entries include information such as name, branch of service, hometown, and a brief narrative of the individual’s wartime service. Photos may be submitted. Individuals can be enrolled through www.wwii memorial.com or by calling (800) 639-4992. The registry database is accessible for search only at the World War II Memorial site on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. cent to 68 percent in this same time period. A 28 Wounded Warrior Support fter The Washington Post published the results of an investigation of Walter Reed Army Medical Center (WRAMC), Washington, D.C., in early 2007, President George W. Bush assembled a nonpartisan commission to investigate. Its ﬁnal report called for, among other changes, the hiring of recovery coordinators, drawn from the ranks of nurses and social workers, to provide soldiers just one point of contact as they move through the system. With the establishment of the Federal Recovery Coordinator Program, injured servicemembers returning from theater now have an ombudsman to help steer them into the proper programs, serve as a patient advocate, and ensure proper care is received. The ﬁrst 10 coordinators now are in place at WRAMC; the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Md.; Brooke Army Medical Center at Fort Sam Houston, Texas; and the Naval Medical Center San Diego.
