The yellow smoke provides the location of the LZ for the incoming chopper, a lifeline to those in the field, bringing replacements, bullets, food, and medication and taking out the wounded. The radio in the foreground and the smoke grenade in the background communicate the Vietnam experience. Second place: (below, left) This 1955 photo shows a flyover of F-89 Scorpion fighters. Submitted by: Col. Richard MacCormack, USAF-Ret. From the judges: The curve of the flag and the formation of the planes are in alignment, showing strong graphic composition. Third place: (below, right) A sailor aboard the destroyer Escort in the Atlantic Ocean in 1953 begins his early training in the Navy. The “training” included sweeping, painting, and polishing brass.
