As a ﬁve-year survivor of breast cancer with less than six months to go to complete hormone therapy, I have tried … to get the providers of public literature aimed at increasing breast cancer awareness and early detection to even mention that men can get it too. The response [has] been a reluctance to dilute the message because women are overwhelmingly more likely to be a victim than men. While the statistics certainly support targeting women with the literature, the mere mention of the male aspect would serve to educate women to watch for it in their man. When I discovered a small lump while scratching an itch on my chest, I mentioned it to my late wife. She demanded that I go to the doctor to have it checked out, because she knew men could get breast cancer. I had never heard of such a thing, but I followed her advice. The result was detection of a cancer in stage I. Had I not had an educated wife who somehow knew men could get breast cancer, I surely would have ignored the lump and very possibly waited too long before being treated. I have since learned of data which indicate a higher fatality rate from breast cancer in men than women, probably due solely to ignorance and failure to get timely treatment. Rear Adm.
