Military Officer - August 2006 - (Page 19) rapidfire NEWS YOU CAN USE Freedom Team Salute The Army Guard and Reserve community is strengthened by the dedication of its soldiers, family members, and employers. Now, there’s a way to honor that dedication. The Freedom Team Salute program provides soldiers with a means to recognize their supporters: spouses, Getting Help Close to Home W hen wounded Guard and Reserve troops return stateside for medical care, they now have the opportunity to stay close to home while working on their recovery. In 2004, the Army launched the Community Based Health Care Initiative as a pilot program to allow, when possible, reserve component soldiers on medical holdover to receive medical care while at home. The program is administered by community-based health care organizations (CBHCOs), which are staffed primarily by mobilized National Guard and Army Reserve servicemembers who serve as case managers. The CBHCOs acquire health care from military treatment facilities, the VA, and the TRICARE network. Maj. Clemens Presogna, nurse staff officer at U.S. Army Reserve Command, says, “The program allows those reserve component soldiers who need outpatient health care the option to return home. They’re telling us that they are happier at home and are healing faster. The program has also helped already overburdened military medical treatment facilities, as well as alleviated the stress on families who have in the past had to travel long distances or temporarily relocate to be with loved ones.” parents, and employers of National Guard and Reserve soldiers. Honorably discharged veterans likewise may nominate themselves for recognition under this program. Nominees will receive an Army lapel pin, an Army decal, a certificate, and a letter signed by the secretary of the Army and the chief of staff of the Army thanking them for their support.
