A National Institute on Aging-sponsored study finds that having a spouse hospitalized for a serious illness is almost one-fourth as bad for the partner’s health as having a spouse who dies. The risk is greatest within 30 days of the spouse’s hospitalization and increases with certain diagnoses, such as dementia and stroke. “When a spouse is hospitalized, the partner’s risk of death increases significantly and remains elevated for up to two years,” notes Dr. Nicholas A. Christakis of Harvard Medical School, one of the study’s authors. The study evaluated more than 500,000 Medicare enrollees age 65 and older from 1993 through 2001. “When we take care of people when they’re sick, we’re also taking care of the patients’ spouses,” Christakis says. After his defeat in the 1912 presidential election, he became an avid naturalist and an intrepid explorer. In 1913 and 1914 he charted a previously unmapped river in the mysterious and deadly rainforests of western Brazil, in what turned out to be a poorly prepared and fatally mismanaged expedition.
