Moses describes the heroism of two American sailors (and many others) as they fought off relentless day and night attacks by waves of German and Italian aircraft, submarines, and torpedo boats. After their freighter was sunk, shipmates Frederick Larsen and Lonnie Dales were rescued, then transferred to a damaged oil tanker for the final, perilous run through the enemy gauntlet of bombs, shells, and torpedoes. Moses also offers the background of Malta’s importance to the Allied war effort. Sixty H.W. Crocker offers a sharp view of 400 years of American military history, from colonial Indian fighting to today’s pursuit of terrorists. Crocker doesn’t care whose toes he steps on, heaping scorn on past enemies and offering belligerent warnings to future ones. He is an ardent cheerleader for America’s military, with hundreds of anecdotes of courage, resourcefulness, and leadership in wartime. America’s servicemembers come out well, but most politicians don’t. Crocker also provides provocative thoughts about why American imperialism is a good thing and why the U.S. should have annexed Mexico in 1848, marched on Moscow in 1918, and never created the League of Nations. — William D.
