Military Officer - August 2007 - (Page 50) chapteractivities the brave men who entered narrow steel tubes to fight for our freedom,” says Hofwolt. Visitors quickly come to appreciate the sacrifices crewmembers made as they move through the restored diesel sub, which sank 44 enemy ships during her nine war patrols. Moored at Ford Island is the USS Missouri — the site where Japanese officials signed the Instrument of Surrender that ended World War II. Capt. Don Hess, USN-Ret., president and chief operating officer of the USS Missouri Memorial Association, oversees the battleship’s daily operations and preservation work performed by more than 5,000 volunteers each year. “There’s an emotion that comes from veterans who visit this ship, because it represents the end of the war and the beginning of an [era] of hope and peace,” says Hess. Also on Ford Island is the Pacific Aviation Museum. Adm. Ron Hays, USN-Ret., who chairs the museum’s board of directors, spends a lot of time fundraising for the museum, which relies heavily on private donations. The museum occupies several World War II airplane hangars that bear bullet scars from the Pearl Harbor attack. Sullivan, Hofwolt, Hess, Hays, and other key personnel who work with the Pearl Harbor Historic Partners want to tie all four major museums and memorials together to create a comprehensive living history of World War II in the Pacific. “I think we have the opportunity to develop Pearl Harbor as a National Historic Site,” says Hays. “That will be awfully important to the nation, and that’s what we’re working on.” To read an expanded version of this article and learn more about MOAA chapter members’ activities in Hawaii, visit www.moaa.org/june2007 and click on “Preserving the Past.” Stay Informed With Call to Action M Hawaii Chapter member Capt. Built on a landfill, the center also has settled more than 30 inches in some spots, and moisture is affecting the rebar and support structure. “Right now, our engineers tell us that the visitor center has two to seven years left in it,” says Sullivan. “We need donations.” Nearby at the USS Bowfin Submarine Museum and Park, Capt. Jerry Hofwolt, USN-Ret., the museum’s executive director, is working to increase the public’s appreciation of military history. “I want the people who visit the Bowfin to take away a sense of pride and understanding of the sacrifice of ON THE WEB ■ Want to join an MOAA chapter OAA’s Department of Council and Chapter Affairs has launched its new e-newsletter, Call to Action. At press time, MOAA’s chapter members had recruited a record 1207 officers. During the same time frame last year, only 134 members were recruited. Many chapters are posting high numbers because of the incentive that allows them to offer free, one-year memberships to currently serving officers. To find out where your chapter stands, visit www.moaa.org/giveme ten. Then, click on the “Give Me 10! Recruitment Tracking” link. MO — Contributors are Col. Lee Lange II, USMC-Ret., director; Col.
