Balanced Diet B read products are a major part of our diet. Some fad diets consider bread a bad food, but bread products can contribute to a balanced diet, when chosen carefully. Being knowledgeable about what bread products are healthier than others is key. Choose low-fat breads such as bagels and French breads. Flaky bread products such as biscuits can have more than 300 calories each, with 100 or more calories from fat. It’s important to remember adding butter will increase significantly the amount of calories. Banana breads, muffins, and coffee cakes are high in both fats and sugar. Whole grain bread products are healthy, because they have a high fiber content. Look for products with whole wheat flour as the first ingredient. Honey wheat bread often is made with white flour rather than whole wheat. ON THE WEB Virtually all bakery ■ Rear Adm.
