chaptersinaction Chapter Achievements From the Field: Southside Virginia Chapter Southside Virginia Chapter members presented a $6,900 check to Gen. Richard Thompson, USA-Ret., and Lt. Gen. Arthur Gregg, USA-Ret., of the U.S. Army Quartermaster Foundation. This is the second consecutive year the chapter has donated the bulk of the money it earned from MOAA’s Give Me 10! campaign to help the museum. During the 2007 campaign, the chapter recruited 700 new national MOAA members. Many of those recruits attended the Quartermaster Center and School or the Army Logistics Management College at Fort Lee or were stationed at the base. Members currently are planning to donate $500 to purchase a marker bearing the chapter’s name that will be located at the museum’s entrance. Great Plains (S.D.) Chapter Great Plains (S.D.) Chapter members attended Military Appreciation Day at South Dakota State University (SDSU) in Brookings. Maj. Gen. Lynn Hartsell, USA-Ret., battled a blizzard for more than 120 miles to attend the event. Four ROTC cadets from SDSU and Dakota State University in Madison received MOAA medals and certiﬁcates. Local Junior ROTC units also were recognized. Chapter member Col. Spencer Hawley, USA-Ret., also received the Legion of Merit for his exceptional service to our country. In separate ceremonies, the chapter presented $500 scholarships to two cadets at both universities. Hampton Roads (Va.) Chapter Hampton Roads (Va.) Chapter member Col. James Smith, USA-Ret., attended the President’s Review and Awards Ceremony at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va., where he presented the MOAA Leadership Award to Army ROTC cadet Shawn Proctor. The chapter also presented awards to Navy ROTC midshipmen from two local universities. Ten local Junior ROTC cadets supported by the chapter also received MOAA medals and awards. Central Florida Chapter Members of the Central Florida Chapter presented the Cadet of the Year Award to three outstanding seniors who participate in one of 26 Junior ROTC units the chapter supports in the Greater Orlando, Fla., area. The program, which started in 1999, is separate from and in addition to the MOAA medals and leadership awards chapter members present to outstanding cadets each year. Instructors from area Junior ROTC units submit nominees for the award. Each nominee then appears in dress uniform before a panel of chapter members, which interviews and judges the cadets. The winner is named Cadet of the Year and receives $2,500, and ﬁrst and second runners-up receive $2,000 and $1,500, respectively. All three winners also receive engraved plaques from the chapter. The program is funded by chapter members’ donations and a grant from Lockheed Martin Corp. MO — Contributors are Col. Lee Lange II, USMC-Ret., director; Col.
