Your article on explosive ordnance disposal brought back a recollection that may be of interest. In August 1943 I was about to graduate from the four-month program for reserve graduate engineers at the U.S. Naval Academy leading to commissioning. We were given some latitude in selecting our next tour of duty, and some programs sent officers to develop interest in and persuade us to select their particular program. One officer was from what he described as “bomb disposal school.” … I was interested, although it ended up as my second choice, and I did not go there. (Instead I received training as an electronics officer, primarily radar, and served on the escort carrier USS Prince William, CVE-31). The thing I remember most was the offbeat approach this officer took in drumming up interest. He said that the school had two mottos: “Our graduates are scattered all over the world,” and “Be calm, or be collected.” I don’t recall just how many of my group were attracted by that sales pitch, but it made an impression.
