Next month, the chapter will host a four-man scramble at Stoneybrook East Golf Club in Orlando. Proceeds will be used to increase the monetary awards for the chapter’s Cadet of the Year program. The event also is being used to help recruit new members for the chapter and national MOAA as part of the “Give Me 10!” campaign. “We have momentum,” says chapter Vice President Maj. Francis Dahmer Jr., USA-Ret. “Now we need to build on it and move forward.” “Give Me 10!” Update National MOAA awarded more than $25,000 in prizes to chapters and recruiters for the 2005 Give Me 10! campaign. Virginia Council Hosts Congressional Luncheon A record 153 people turned out for the Virginia Congressional Delegation Luncheon, hosted by the Virginia Council of Chapters (VCOC). The annual event drew 115 VCOC members and spouses; 10 of Virginia’s 13 congressional representatives; MOAA President Rep. Jo Ann Davis (R-Va.) was one of several Virginia legislators to address the Virginia Council of Chapters’ annual gathering. Rep. Jim Moran (D-Va.) attended and spoke with MOAA members and staff. 46 MILITARY OFFICER SEPTEMBER 2006 Vice Adm. Norb Ryan Jr., USN-Ret.; and national staff members. VCOC members thanked their congressional legislators for supporting legislation last year that benefited active duty forces, military retirees, and veterans and their families. Members also asked for continued support on issues such as increasing the defense budget, stopping the erosion of TRICARE benefits, and fixing the Survivor Benefit Plan. “I would encourage other councils to do this,” says VCOC President Col. Bill Flanagan, USA-Ret. “We’re building closer ties to our legislators.” VCOC members also presented the council’s Minuteman Award to MOAA’s former Council and Chapter Affairs Deputy Director Col. Jim Pauls, USAF-Ret., in appreciation of his outstanding service and support. Pauls is the first national staff member to receive the award twice. New Chapter Chartered in Virginia the George C. Marshall Chapter. Most of the chapter’s 59 members attended the April 12 chartering ceremony, along with Lt. Col. Pat Green, USARet., 1st vice president and personal affairs officer for the Virginia Council of Chapters, and Maj. Gen. John Knapp, USA-Ret., who helped found the chapter. Knapp is mayor of Lexington, Va., and once served as the superintendent of the Virginia Military Institute (VMI). Former Council and Chapter Affairs Deputy Director Col. Jim Pauls, USAF-Ret., worked with Lexington resident Maj. Gen. Tom Tait, USARet., to form the chapter. Organizing meetings were held in January and February, drawing support from a core group of national MOAA members who lived in the area. Soon after, the chapter applied for its charter. Many chapter members are VMI graduates or serve on its faculty. Not surprisingly, members decided to name their chapter after the school’s most illustrious graduate, Gen. George C. Marshall.
