These smaller developments typically comprise 450 to 1,800 homes, but some include more than 4,000 homes. Like their bigger counterparts, these smaller communities offer the standard planned-community amenities, such as fitness centers, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, multipurpose recreation rooms, and landscaping services. Although access to amenities such as golf courses, tennis courts, recreation rooms, and walking trails has become standard at many large and midsized senior-centered developments, residents at a retirement community in Georgetown, Texas, for example, have coordinated classes about military history taught by retired officers. Another community association organized a class about Turkish history and culture, which concluded with a group trip to Turkey. Boomers will be among the besteducated retirees, so it’s not surprising to see increased opportunities for educational enrichment for older Americans. According to AARP, 27 percent of all boomers have college degrees, compared with 12 percent of older Americans. In May 2003, The New York Times reported that 60 colleges across the U.S. are linked to retirement communities. Many retired military personnel flock to communities with apartments, cottages, and assisted living facilities with close ties to universities.
