Military Officer - October 2006 - (Page 14) yourviews While I agree there should be a reserve component four-star on the Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS), that slot should not be added until the Coast Guard is on the JCS. I don’t care if the Coast Guard is part of [DHS]. [Coast Guard members] are full-time military, have assets (people, ships, and aircraft), and are always on duty — semper paratus! Furthermore, they can arrest the bad guys and have proven themselves skilled fighters and defenders of liberty and justice. They did not do badly after Hurricane Katrina either. We cannot wage war without them, and they should have a permanent seat on the JCS. Lt. Col. Thomas D. Morgan, USA-Ret. Steilacoom, Wash. FREE G N HIPPI ect! S in Eff Now I agree with [Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Peter Pace, USMC] that giving a Joint Chiefs seat to the chief of the National Guard Bureau would be disruptive and unnecessary. Although they rightfully claim to be shorted money, gear, etcetera, they still wear the same uniforms as the chiefs of staff of their respective services. I could see a separate seat if they wore orange or gray uniforms. Maj. John Brennan, AUS-Ret. Kalamazoo, Mich.
