Army medics and nurses at the 28th Combat Support Hospital in Baghdad, Iraq, have taken over temporary parental duties for Fatima Jubouri — a 9-month-old baby found abandoned in a garbage container in Iraq’s Saidiya district June 25. Although the details surrounding the situation remain unclear, Iraqi police were able to learn that shortly after Jubouri’s father died, her mother and uncle were killed by gunfire. Police suspect Jubouri’s mother hid her in the garbage container before she died, because she feared for her daughter’s safety. According to a Reuters article published Aug. 14, Jubouri weighed just over 8 pounds when she arrived at the hospital, but her weight had increased to “a healthier 11.6 pounds” by early August. MOAA President Vice Adm.
