rapidfire Don’t Get Scammed The American Red Cross is warning military spouses about an identity-theft scam that has targeted family members of deployed servicemembers. A young-sounding woman with an American accent telephoned a military spouse, identified herself as a Red Cross representative, and told the spouse her husband was hurt in Iraq and had been medically evacuated to Germany. Both of the career fairs are free and open to all active duty, former, retired, Guard, and Reserve servicemembers and their spouses. Sort It Out H ealth insurance, such as your employer’s health care plan, TRICARE or TRICARE For Life, or Medicare, covers medical bills related to the treatment of a sickness or injury. It pays for your doctor, hospital, and ofﬁce visits and the procedures performed to heal you, but recuperation and recovery are not covered. Medicare and TRICARE do not cover these long-term care (LTC) needs. LTC is valuable when you can’t perform normal activities and need help to function. It is intended to maintain health, not treat it. LTC insurance pays for in-home assistance or for a stay in an assisted-living or nursing facility. Help with eating, toileting, dressing, bathing, transferring from bed to chair or the reverse, incontinence issues, or cognitive impairments also is covered by LTC insurance. If you are VA-eligible and need LTC, check with your state VA ofﬁce for LTC insurance options; each state’s coverage is unique. MILITARY OFFICER OCTOBER 2007 said doctors couldn’t start treatment until paperwork was completed, and to start the paperwork, the caller needed the spouse to verify her husband’s Social Security number and date of birth. Military family members are urged not to give out personal information over the phone if contacted by unknown or unverified callers.
