Military Officer - October 2007 - (Page 65) pagesofhistory Medal of Honor More than 3,000 American servicemembers have earned the Medal of Honor since the Civil War. A new museum teaches visitors about these heroes and the medal’s history. A new museum honors the 3,462 servicemembers who have earned the Medal of Honor, showing how ordinary Americans exhibited extraordinary courage during wartime, from the Civil War to the war on terrorism. Located aboard the World War II aircraft carrier USS Yorktown at the Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum in Charleston, S.C., the museum aims to educate visitors about the medal’s origin, the toll of war, and the bravery the medal evokes. The museum has four exhibits, including the Wall of Honor, the Combat Tunnel, Freedom Isn’t Free, and the Hall of Heroes. O Victory Unveiled n Jan. 12, 1968, helicopter pilot Ted Moore and his flight mechanic Glen Woods shot down two North Vietnamese biplanes over Laos — the only time a helicopter had taken down a fixed-wing craft during the Vietnam War. Their aerial feat has been captured in a new painting by Keith Woodcock. The painting is the fifth in a series commissioned to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the founding of the CIA. The paintings will be displayed at CIA headquarters in Langley, Va., and will rotate at presidential libraries. THIS MONTH IN HISTORY ■ On Oct. 1, 1918, during World War I, a U.S. Moore, an Army pilot recruited for the CIA’s Air America, was piloting a Uh1D Huey when he spotted a formation of AN-2 Colt biplanes attacking the Air Force radar base in Laos. American bombers had been receiving guidance from the mountaintop base to attack Communist supply depots, airfields, and railroad yards. Moore positioned his helicopter above the planes, while Woods fired his AK-47 rifle. Both planes crashed into mountain ridges. T World War I History Project he Library of Congress’ Veterans History Project has launched a new section on its Web site honoring World War I servicemembers. The site, www.loc.gov/vets, posts personal stories of nearly two dozen men and women and includes photographs, journals, and letters. Among the stories is that of Frank Buckles, who lied about his age to join the Army, went on to drive motorcycles, cars, and ambulances in England and France, and later guarded German prisoners. World War I is among the least-documented wars of those covered by the Veterans History Project. Officials hope the new site will bring more people into contact with these veterans.
