Col. Mary Garr, USA (member since 2008): This Medical Service Corps officer is now the Fort Sam Houston, Texas, garrison commander. In her 24 years of service, Garr has served at Fort Bliss and Fort Hood, Texas, as well as Korea; Washington, D.C.; and Europe, where she was chief of staff, Europe Regional Medical Command. Brig. Gen. Joy Stevens, ARNG (member since 2006): Stevens began her military service in 1979 and received her commission in 1981. She has served at all levels of command and staff, including a brigade-level command in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. She is the first woman promoted to general in the Texas National Guard and currently is one of the deputy commanding generals for the 36th Infantry Division (L). She is a member of MOAA’s Active Duty, National Guard, and Reserve Advisory Committee. Lt. Cmdr. Charles D. Thompson, USNR-Ret. (life member since 1990): Thompson was born Jan. 12, 1926, and commissioned Nov. 22, 1944. He served 24 years in the Navy and Navy Reserve and worked 32 years as a national buyer for Sears, Roebuck & Co. Thompson was 18 years, 10 months, and 10 days old when he was commissioned, but Cmdr. Michael G. Col. Thomas R.E. Waters, USAF-Ret. (life member since 1995): Waters served 321/2 years on active duty, retiring in August 1997, then became a DoD Education Activity (DoDEA) teacher and administrator in Germany. He was DoDEA’s 2007 Assistant Principal of the Year. Waters, who received a Purple Heart from service in Vietnam, is looking forward to service in MOAA’s Southern Nevada Chapter.
