Military Officer - December 2007 - (Page 24) rapidfire Defining a Hero R Share Your Wartime Recollections esearchers at Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y., surveyed 1,036 World War II veterans and found that 83 combat veterans who were awarded medals for hero- T he Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) and the Veterans History Project (VHP) are gathering firsthand accounts from men and women who have served the U.S. in wartime. The initiative runs through May 31, 2008. Veterans may share their stories by visiting www.pbs.org, searching PBS StoryShare, locating their TV station, and then clicking on Share Your Story. Stories may be written or called in. Your memoirs and collateral materials can be housed in the permanent collections of the Library of Congress. The VHP has created a field kit with complete instructions, available by e-mailing www.loc.gov/vets or calling (888) 371-5848. A nonprofit organization, The National Combat History Archive, is collecting combat film, photographs, and personal memoirs and disseminating them to researchers and historians to preserve America’s rich military heritage. T 24 he U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) and its network of lenders are helping military entrepreneurs receive loans from the Patriot Express Pilot Loan Initiative. Patriot Express is a streamlined loan product based on the agency’s SBA Express Program but with enhanced guaranty and interest-rate characteristics. Nearly 375 banks and lending institutions are approved to participate in Patriot Express, whose loans total more than $2 million dollars in the early stage of this initiative and range from $5,000 to $350,000 in individual loan amounts. Loans up to $500,000 are available and qualify for SBA’s maximum guaranty of up to 85 percent for loans of $150,000 or less and up to 75 percent for loans from over $150,000 up to $500,000. For loans above $350,000, lenders are required to take all available collateral to secure the loan and may obtain collateral for smaller loans depending upon individual bank requirements.
