While I pledge allegiance to the flag, I swore to support and defend the Constitution. Further, I fail to see how this resolution falls within the mission and purpose of MOAA. Practically, every moment spent on this resolution detracts from addressing the legitimate issues of the association identified [in] the other resolutions. The interdependence of security, economy, and energy and their impact on practical issues like readiness, the QRMC recommendations, and health care will provide more than enough to do on “proposed legislation affecting the career force, the retired community, and veterans of the uniformed services.” For these reasons, I will continue to vote against Association Resolution 1. —Lt. Universal City, Texas I do not believe the [flag] amendment is meant to legislate respect for our flag, no more than the civil rights law was meant to legislate equality for minorities and women. What the amendment will do is show violators of our national emblem they may not do so with impunity. There are many other avenues of protest available.
