Today's Officer - Winter 2007 - (Page 2) EDITOR’S BRIEF MOVING ON ABOUT FIVE YEARS AGO we welcomed a new magazine to the MOAA family. With this month’s publication, however, we must now bid farewell to Today’s Officer, the print magazine. What has changed to cause us to stop printing this magazine? And what, if anything, will replace it? First, a lot has changed in five years both for MOAA and for mass communications. When the association changed its name from The Retired Officers Association to Military Officers Association of America in 2003, it was to recognize that we serve — and always have served — the total military community, not just retired officers. Following the name change, MOAA has continued to represent retired servicemembers, but it also has had great success bringing more currently serving officers into the membership. Today’s Officer’s mission was to communicate with both currently serving and second career officers. MOAA realized those two groups weren’t the same, but the staff saw the new magazine as the best way at the time to tailor content for younger members. Today, because of the success of the name change, we have many more currently serving military members. MOAA needs to find better ways to meet their unique information needs — while continuing to serve second career and retired officers. This leads us to consider the profound changes in the way people get their news and information today. For the younger crowd, print is being eclipsed by electronic media as their preferred information channel. So, to answer the second question, we’ll continue to produce the unique content you see in Today’s Officer, but we’ll do it online and via e-newsletters. As I write, we are redesigning MOAA’s Web site to better communicate with all segments of our membership. We’re also refining MOAA’s e-newsletters to ensure they contain information relevant to each officer’s life stage. If you’re not already a subscriber, I urge you to go to www.moaa.org/email and sign up. Today we say “farewell” to print but “welcome” to the new media.
