Today's Officer - Winter 2007 - (Page 26) BULLETINS Deploy With the Sesame Street Gang EXPLAINING A DEPLOYMENT to your little ones can be difficult, but the folks at Sesame Workshop, the nonprofit educational organization behind “Sesame Street,” have teamed up with Wal-Mart and Military OneSource to make the adjustment easier for both parents and children. The result is “Talk, Listen, Connect: Helping Families During Military Deployment,” a kit military parents with children 3-5 years old can order for free. The kits, available in both English and Spanish, help families handle the feelings, challenges, and concerns experienced in the different phases of deployment: pre-deployment, deployment, and homecoming. It comes with a DVD featuring the Sesame Street Muppets, a magazine for parents and caregivers, and a children’s activity poster. The kit has been so successful it spurred an Emmy-nominated television special, “When Parents Are Deployed,” hosted by Cuba Gooding Jr. For more information, or to download the kit materials and TV special, visit www.sesameworkshop.org/tlc. It THE WAR AT HOME ALTHOUGH THE CIVIL WAR is famous for “pitting brother against brother,” there’s never been a book telling the story of how that conflict tore apart America’s first family. In House of Abraham (Houghton Mifflin Co., 2007), author and historian Stephen Berry fills this gap in Civil War history. Several of Mary Todd Lincoln’s brothers fought for the Confederacy, while others plagued the Lincoln administration with their scandals. Berry’s book describes not only how the Civil War changed the Lincoln family but also how the family’s struggles influenced the course of the war.
