Similar to the Morningstar Rating for mutual funds, the new rating system for hedge funds uses a scale of 1 to 5 stars. Rather than using the self-described categories provided by hedge fund managers, Morningstar first categorizes the hedge funds into one of 17 Morningstar Categories—such as convertible arbitrage or emerging market equity—according to a series of quantitative and qualitative measures. Morningstar then ranks and rates the hedge funds against their peers in the Morningstar Categories based on risk-adjusted return. May 13–16 In March, Morningstar Investment Services introduced a managed account service consisting of a lineup of five actively managed portfolios that use exchange-traded funds. Ameritas Investment Corp. and Centaurus Financial, two independent broker-dealer firms, selected Morningstar Managed ETF Portfolios for use by their investment advisor representatives. Ameritas has 600 advisor representatives, and Centaurus has 500. All Morningstar managed portfolios, including these latest ETF portfolios, are available to advisors through multiple custodians.
