This is one of the ancillary insights managing editor of mutual fund content Dan Culloton gleaned from a recent visit to Kalmar Investments in Delaware. In addition to clarifying Culloton’s understanding of Kalmar’s self-styled “growth-with-value” investment process and history, founder Ford Draper repeatedly had to remind the veteran fund analyst that the colonial craft for which Kalmar is named—the Kalmar Nyckel—was a ship, not a boat. “I also cover Vanguard, so I should have known better,” Culloton says. “They also don’t like it when people call their ship a boat.” Culloton profiles Draper and Kalmar in “Shipshape” (Page 48). Nadia Papagiannis As Morningstar’s alternative investment specialist, Nadia Papagiannis says her goal is to debunk the myths that alternatives are scary and complex. She writes the Spotlight’s main article, “Mainstreaming Alternative Investments” (Page 32), and moderates the Morningstar Conversation with Cliff Asness and Andrew Lo, “How Alternatives Protect Portfolios” (Page 42). “In doing this project, I really hope to get the message across that there is a whole world of investing out there that many advisors aren’t taking advantage of,” she says, “and their clients may be suffering as a result.” Yarek Waszul To create the illustrations of this issue, we turned to Yarek Waszul, an editorial illustrator in Toronto. His work has been published in The New York Times, BusinessWeek, SEED, The Walrus, and many other publications. When illustrating financial articles, Waszul says that he is of two minds. “On one hand, it’s extremely easy to create an image that feels cliched. On the other hand, it’s extremely rewarding to come up with a fresh twist on a cliche.” We’re glad he achieved the latter. Laura Fox Laura Fox, who writes about Morningstar’s alternative investments survey, “After Meltdown, More Advisors Turn to Alternatives” (Page 36), is an associate market manager and a member of the Morningstar Development Program, a unique two-year rotational program for recent college graduates that exposes them to different parts of the company. Outside of work, she teaches creative writing to young students at 826Chicago and volunteers at the Art Institute’s Educator Resource Center. Magdalena Mroczek, Warren Miller, and James Harrington James Harrington heads the business valuation team in Morningstar’s Financial Communications business. The team is responsible for producing the widely referenced Ibbotson SBBI Classic and SBBI Valuation yearbooks, Cost of Capital Yearbook, and Beta Book. Magdalena Mroczek is a business valuation analyst with Morningstar, and Warren Miller a senior quantitative equity analyst. They team to write “A More Powerful Bankruptcy Prediction Model” (Page 20).
