By the Numbers: VAs First-Quarter Assets Hit an All-Time High By Frank O’Connor Variable annuities continued to show strength in the first quarter of 2011, with new sales of $38.7 billion—a 23.2% increase over first-quarter 2010 sales. First-quarter sales were also 4.3% higher than fourth-quarter 2010 sales. Assets under management posted another all-time high—$1.56 trillion, a 3.6% increase over 2010 year-end assets. Net cash flow also rose in the first quarter to $5.8 billion, from $5.4 billion in the fourth quarter and $3.6 billion in the first quarter of 2010. The top-selling companies did not change a great deal in rank, though market share continued to concentrate in the top companies. Still holding in the top two spots were Prudential and Metlife, with market shares of 17.6% and 14.7%, respectively. (So, just under one third of variable annuity sales were reported under the products of these two companies.) Jackson National, the third-ranked VA issuer, increased its share of the market to 11.8% from 11.2%. TIAA-CREF stayed in fourth place with an 8.8% share of sales, and Lincoln was fifth with 6.0% of the market. New sales for these top five companies accounted for 58.9% of reported sales, up from 57.4% for the top five in the fourth quarter of 2010. The distribution channel sales leaders continued to be Prudential and MetLife, with Prudential taking the top spot in the bank, independent planner, and wirehouse channels; MetLife leading in regional firms; and Ameriprise topping the captive agency channel (ex-TIAA-CREF). Frank O’Connor is manager of Morningstar’s variable annuity software applications.
