As an investment strategy specialist for ING’s private banking division in Belgium, Vandermeulen can now offer quick assessments of a full range of stocks. Thanks to up-to-date analysis from Morningstar® Institutional Equity Research Services, the private banking division can remain lean while delivering excellent service.

Investors can turn to Morningstar as the source for independent assessments of exchangetraded funds. As ETFs grow in number and complexity, we’re helping investors evaluate these vehicles and how they fit within a portfolio. We also assemble custom research solutions for institutions from elements such as data for nearly 100% of the ETF market, research reports, webinars, videos, and more. Our analysts currently cover 325 ETFs in the United States, representing 96% of the total assets under management, and we’re expanding our global coverage. Whenever an ETF launches, we publish an initial report to help advisors and investors stay aware of these rapidly evolving investments. Every analyst applies a consistent methodology while generating in-depth reports distilled to a concise opinion of
a fund. Leveraging our equity research, our ETF methodology values equity-based ETFs by considering the sum of their parts. Our research reports are advisor-oriented, focusing on an ETF’s suitability and place within a portfolio. Institutions support their internal teams and connect with customers via our ETF data, ratings, reports, and Morningstar® Site Builder tools (see p. 51). They build Morningstar-branded or internally branded education centers using our online investor classrooms, advisor tutorials, video reports, and industry commentary. Our educational content comes from an independent, third-party perspective, so investors can receive objective advice.

Stay on top of stocks. Before working with Morningstar, ING would wait a month or more for postearnings reports from their research providers, and sometimes go entire quarters without updates. Today, Vandermeulen and his colleagues receive reports soon after earnings announcements and significant events. “Morningstar helps us provide our clients with the latest report on a stock anytime,” says Vandermeulen. Comply with regulations. Morningstar delivers the complete coverage—including reports on U.S. and European companies across all sectors—that ING needs to comply with European Union regulations. “Some other providers don’t fully cover the market,” Vandermeulen explains. “Working with Morningstar is a good way for us to adhere to legal constraints without having to expand our internal research department.” Filter the wide-moat companies. Vandermeulen says Morningstar’s equity analysis has “a clear methodology that’s easy to understand,” and calls the Economic Moat Rating approach “terrific.” “It’s so logical,” he explains. “We need long-term investment ideas, and instead of doing a lot of research ourselves, we can look for wide-moat companies at attractive prices.” He also enjoys debating stocks with Morningstar analysts. “It’s important to share opinions with other people who have good company knowledge,” he adds. “I like to call and discuss why an analyst is negative or bullish on a company. In some cases, it helps me to challenge or moderate my own convictions.” K
