Bond markets roiled investors in 2016, and
fixed-income funds saw outflows toward the end
of the year, in an abrupt about-face. The only
thing certain today is that more uncertainty lies
ahead. Sarah Bush has an excellent vantage point
from which to survey the landscape. Bush
is a director of manager research at Morningstar
Research Services, where she oversees the
North America fixed-income team. Her role gives
her insight into some of the best-known names in
the business. In "Bond Market Bumps Ahead"
(Page 70), Bush talks to three fixed-income icons,
all portfolio managers of Morningstar Medalist
funds and past recipients of the Morningstar FixedIncome Manager of the Year award. They share
their perspective on inflation and interestrate expectations, threats to global economies,
high corporate leverage, and unpredictable policy
changes from a new administration.

With this issue, Laura Lallos joins the Morningstar
magazine team as managing editor, bringing
both investment research and magazine
experience to the role. Lallos has a long history
at Morningstar, beginning her career here
in 1993 as part of an early wave of analyst hires
as the company was rapidly expanding its research
capability. She rose to senior analyst and editor
positions in manager research before leaving
to take a senior writer position at Money magazine.
While earning a law degree, she continued to
freelance for Money and other financial
publications, including this one. In fact, she
contributed an Undiscovered Managers
profile in the first issue, 10 years ago. She returned
to Morningstar in 2012 as a senior analyst.

New York-based illustrator Case Jernigan says
that cities come and go in his work. "I'm not sure
if it's a direct reaction to my surroundings, or
if it's more related to the emptiness and fullness
found in big cities," he says. For our issue,
they make an appearance. "I approached the
project thinking about structure-the flatness, the
two-dimensional structures of the buildings
on the cover. The splash features angular and
faceted structures stretching back and forth and
out of the image. The transition shows growth, but
also a change in vantage point and space."
