This issue of the magazine is a very special
one for us. Ten years ago this spring, we published
issue number one. The magazine was called
Morningstar Advisor back then, and we published
it quarterly. (We went bimonthly two years
later and took Advisor off the masthead
in 2014.) The idea was to give financial advisors
institutional-quality research, something
we believed was not being offered in a market
saturated with practice management articles
and industry news.
The spotlight topic of the debut issue was a new
research initiative at Morningstar: hedge
funds. Advisors were increasingly using hedge
funds of funds, and we believed that type
of investing was ripe for a Morningstar perspective.
We also chose the subject because we thought
it would be the most un-Morningstar-like topic we
could do. To say the least, "Morningstar" and
"hedge funds" were two things rarely associated
with one another.
The first issue also established the role design
would play in conveying our research. Anyone
vaguely familiar with Morningstar knows
that design is one of the company's load-bearing
pillars, on the same level with technology
and research. In the field of financial services,
Morningstar design is a differentiator that
clarifies complex information. In looking at the
publications geared toward advisors at
that time, we noticed one common denominator
