about their covers: pictures of white guys in suits.
We took a different approach.
Under the supervision of art director Alex Skoirchet,
we hired an illustrator to create original art for
the magazine's cover and interior that reflected the
themes we were tackling. Lloyd Miller, an awardwinning veteran who studied under Morningstar
design consultant Philip Burton, took on the
challenge of illustrating our hedge fund theme.
He submitted a cover packed full of a colorful array
of bubbles to represent the bewildering world
of hedge funds. Emerging from the bubbles were
the letters "H" and "F": Morningstar brings clarity
to the subject. The high bar had been set. Over
the next decade, Miller would illustrate four more
covers for us, the most by any illustrator.

For the anniversary issue, we resisted nostalgia.
Instead, we took the Morningstar approach:
look ahead. "The sun is but a morning star."
We decided to focus on giving you new research
and ideas about the future of investing. Of course,
we acknowledge the past and what we learned.
One of my favorite articles in the issue is
managing editor Laura Lallos' review of 10 years
of Undiscovered Manager profiles on Page 94.
We had some misses, but overall, we did a fine job
of selecting managers who would go on to
perform well. (Lallos wrote one of the two profiles
that appeared in the first issue as a freelance
writer between Morningstar stints.) But mostly in
this issue, we wanted to talk about the here and
now and where we're going as investors.

We're happy to have new Morningstar CEO Kunal
Kapoor write the Letter From the Board (Page 8).
(Kapoor moderated several Morningstar
Conversations in the early years, going on the road
to places such as Baltimore and Las Vegas
to do them.)
What we have created is a guidebook of how
Morningstar is positioned to help you
tackle the investing challenges of the future.
Skoirchet, publisher Leslie Marshall, and I have
been on the masthead since day one. We're
proud of what we've accomplished in the past
decade, but we're more pleased that we
at Morningstar magazine will have the opportunity
to help you and your clients, as best as we can,
to a prosperous future.

That theme is, of course, conveyed on our cover.
For the first time, it was designed entirely inhouse, without an outside illustrator. Skoirchet
believed a more typographical approach
was appropriate, and he created one that carries
us from the past into the future. The metal
for 10th anniversaries is aluminum. Hence, the
silver-gray lettering.
Our Spotlight section contains 10 in-depth
articles by Morningstar leaders about the state
of their particular area of expertise. They're
grouped into four areas: investing, the industry,
advisors, and equity research. Sprinkled
throughout the issue, our regular columnists and
other features offer more views of the future.
