A senior analyst with Morningstar Research
Services' manager research team, Leo Acheson
analyzes investment strategies and the
ways they are packaged for individual investors.
Acheson covers multiasset strategies from
firms including JPMorgan, GMO, T. Rowe Price,
and Voya. He also leads Morningstar's 529
college-savings plan research. This issue's
Spotlight section showcases Acheson's latest
effort: Morningstar's first study evaluating health
savings account plans. "HSAs are increasingly
popular, but investors have few resources
for navigating the hundreds of plans available,"
he says. "Our study establishes metrics that
investors should consider when choosing an HSA."
In "Room for Improvement" (Page 38), Acheson
and his colleagues evaluate 10 of the largest
HSA plan providers as both vehicles for covering
current medical costs and ways to invest
for the future. As is often the case when it comes
to saving and investing, costs prove to be
key. Acheson emphasizes that participants using
HSAs to save for future medical expenses
"should seek plans that offer a menu of cheap,
high-quality funds."

This issue's cover illustrator, Luba Lukova,
is a New York-based artist and designer known
for distinctive and expressive posters that
portray social commentary. "When art director
Alex Skoirchet first showed me layouts of
previous issues of Morningstar, I loved the clean,
elegant design, and I had a good feeling
that our collaboration would go well," Lukova says.
"As an artist and designer, I always look for concise
images that have humanistic elements and
reveal concepts in an accessible and memorable
way. The cover image depicts the complex
issues of health savings accounts; it shows the
intertwined hands of a healthcare provider
and a person saving for their healthcare. My idea
was to show that we are all interdependent
when it comes to healthcare." Lukova's work has
been exhibited in museums around the world,
including the Museum of Modern Art in New
York; UNESCO in Paris; DDD Gallery, Osaka, Japan;
the Art Institute of Boston; and most recently,
the Museum of Design in Atlanta.
