Jon Hale

Jon Hale has directed Morningstar's sustainable
investing research initiatives since 2016,
when the Morningstar Sustainability Rating for
funds was launched. Hale's interest in the
field goes back to 1995, when he joined
Morningstar as a mutual fund analyst and began
covering socially responsible funds. "I never
thought the industry would evolve into what
it is today," he says. "There is much more focus on
the material financial impact of sustainability
issues. Business schools are offering sustainability
programs. People like Nobel laureate Robert
Engle are researching the impact of climate
change on equity markets."
In this issue, Hale introduces Morningstar's
latest sustainable investing tool, the Morningstar
Portfolio Carbon Risk Score. ("New Tools
Assess Carbon Risks in Portfolios," Page 80.) It is
based on a company carbon risk rating developed
by Sustainalytics, Morningstar's partner in
environmental, social, and governance research.
Many companies have carbon exposure,
but Sustainalytics assesses how well a company
is managing that risk. "This captures the fact
that some companies with similar carbon
footprints are managing their carbon risk more
effectively than others," Hale says. Now,
fund investors can evaluate the risk embedded
in their portfolios.

Hyesu Lee

Illustrator Hyesu Lee says she tackled this
issue by first drawing a series of small images
of key terms and references that have to
do with our theme, packaged investing. "I decided
to doodle out each element in order to create
visual focal points that represent the contents of
the theme as best as possible," she says.
This process led her to the idea of creating the
mold of model parts we see on the cover. It
represents how today's investors are increasingly
using all-in-one solutions to meet their financial
goals. Lee describes herself as a "happy,
clumsy, and messy illustrator," but we love her
warm, cheerful style. Her work has also appeared
in Advertising Age, The Boston Globe, The
New Yorker, The Washington Post, and Time Out
New York.
