Diverse funds. “In 2001 we identified the desire for funds specializing in asset allocation to provide our shareholders with broad market diversification for downside protection,” recalls Carter. Serving as the consultant for these asset allocation funds, Morningstar’s investment advisory group helped design the portfolios and select their underlying funds. The first set included conservative, moderate, moderately aggressive, and aggressive funds, which Morningstar’s investment advisory group continues to monitor and rebalance. “By the end of 2002 we had about $1.5 billion in those funds,” says Carter, “and as of
June 30, 2011, those funds stood at $22.1 billion—a 1,373% increase.” Simple conversations. These new asset allocation funds went over well with the sales teams at Transamerica Capital Management— and with its clients. Dave Paulsen, the group’s chief sales officer, explains, “We’re able to offer this core asset allocation strategy that eases the financial advisor’s workload and allows for simple conversations with customers. It’s easy to explain and for the customer to understand.”
A new role. Meanwhile, Transamerica Asset Management Group continued to introduce new products with Morningstar’s investment advisory group. “We started to refer to this group in 2006 not as a consultant, but as a portfolio construction manager,” recalls Carter. “Transamerica Asset Management Group considered Morningstar’s investment advisory group the decision-maker on the underlying investments for these funds.” When the asset management arm screens new subadvisors for its lineup, it sometimes asks Morningstar’s investment advisory group for an opinion on a particular investment manager. 33
