ON JAN. 15, 2009.Two minutes later, during the initial ascent, the pilot radioed New York Terminal Radar Approach Control—a double bird-strike had resulted in complete loss of engine thrust, and he requested a return to LaGuardia. Realizing that this would not be possible, he requested clearance to land at New Jersey’s Teterboro Airport. With lack of altitude making that also impracticable, the pilot’s final message to central control was “We’re gonna be in the Hudson.” Successfully (and literally) ditching the plane and saving all 155 passengers with no serious injuries, Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger III became a national hero overnight, no less so as he checked the aircraft twice over before being the last to leave as it slowly submerged into the frigid waters of New York’s Hudson River. A scene befitting the world’s most filmed city, it was only captured by a few security cameras and groups of astonished witnesses. Floating on the Hudson after the evacuation, the stricken vessel exemplified the eternal tug-of-war between man and nature in our inexorable pursuit of technological advancement. Just as the sun sundered the wax-andfeather wings of Icarus, a flock of Canadian geese disabled both engines of Flight 1549. With the Hudson River offering a natural runway, as the Aegean Sea cradled Icarus’ fall, fickle nature showed that it can be both friend 54 one+ 08.10
