U B THE Well Met BY JESSIE STATES The industry celebrated a new sustainable event tool. Hosted buyers handed out their RFPs. Ed Begley Jr. encouraged green living. Professionals applied for jobs in the career center. Puppies got cuddled, and weeds got pulled. One lucky card player earned a seat at the World Series of Poker Main Event. Granville Street shut down for a party-to-end-all-parties. This year, MPI welcomed 2,732 industry professionals July 24-27 at the World Education Congress in Vancouver, a 13.5 percent increase from 2009. We can’t reverse history or re-create the experience, but here’s a peek at what you didn’t catch this time around. Fanning the Flames Saturday night, the city of Vancouver closed the convention center’s west plaza, which overlooks Vancouver Harbour and the North Shore Mountains, and lit the Olympic torch for the first time since the winter event. Later, fun had no limit at the first annual Big Deal poker event, benefitting the MPI Foundation (see Page 91).
