> 32 CONNECTIONS > B Y J E S S I E S TAT E S It Was Not Interesting JAMES WARD CONSIDERS HIMSELF BORING. He blogs about the different kinds of transportation he uses, the peculiar questions in his Trivial Pursuit board game, his inability to use a hotel sink. I ask him to explain to me how—as even the most seasoned meeting profs struggled to attract attendance and break even—he conceived and staged a sell-out event that was also, in a word, boring. Ward says he has no idea, he didn’t realize these were hard times and he just kind of did it. Honestly, I shouldn’t have asked. I already know why Boring 2010 was an unmitigated success. Ward built his conference on an already existing community of oddball bloggers, thinkers and readers. The group’s individual members aren’t necessarily friends, at least not in the face-to-face, one+ 02.11
