THE ENERGY OF MANY The Economics of Meetings FOR YEARS, WE’VE TALKED ABOUT PROVING THE ECONOMIC VALUE OF MEETINGS AND THAT THOSE MEETINGS, IN TURN, GET BUSINESS DONE. Now, through a collaborative effort with multiple associations and an exclusive MPI partnership with American Business Journals, we’re able to demonstrate unequivocally these two critically important things. I can’t recall a time when two initiatives blended so well. This month, MPI’s collaboration with a consortium of industry groups resulted in the first-ever Economic Significance of Meetings to the U.S. Economy research, which complemented perfectly our unique supplement with American Business Journals. The incredibly powerful one-two punch demonstrated to our community and our peers just how to take high-level economic studies and bring them to legislators and policy-makers in a meaningful way. Inspired by the first-ever national study of the economic impact of meetings and events (conducted in Canada from 2007 to 2008 8 by the MPI Foundation Canada), the primary goal of the U.S. research was al to create common data to demonstrate mmon the contribution that meetings make to ution jobs, the economy and tax revenue— onomy and metrics that other countries can use to validate the power of events. We can tell our story in Washington, D.C., and in cities and towns across the country. It is the same story we share through our partnership with American Business Journals. In 26 media markets across the United States that reach 300,000 business executives, MPI published a supplement in February BizJournals, Getting Business Done: How and Why Meetings and Business Events Bolster Your Overall Strategy, highlighting how meetings mean business for our national economy and help business get done in the corporate marketplace. The issue marks the second year of a partnership that has reinforced the business value of meetings to the very audience that most needs to understand—c-level executives. This year is going to be a better year for business. As the world recovers from the global financial crisis, we have a story to share about the value and importance of events. MPI will spreadremain at the forefront, spr meetings ing the word that meetin are good for business AND the economy. Corporate Social Responsibility InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) is supporting a five-year CSR initiative to help meeting and event industry professionals achieve sustainable organizational success through development of training, certification, reporting tools and a CSR research center.
