® May 2011 • Volume 4 • Number 4 EDITORIAL STAFF EDITOR IN CHIEF David Basler, dbasler@mpiweb.org Texting & Beanbag Chairs JUST 10 YEARS AGO WE QUESTIONED THE VIABILITY OF EMAIL. Now we’re emailing and texting from the palms of our hands. Our fastpaced world won’t allow time for us to email from an office chair and a desktop computer. We communicate and interact on the go, and mobile is most assuredly the new email (and Internet) platform. Check out the photo on Page 38, and see the future of meetings at work today—young developers conferencing in beanbag chairs and sharing ideas using a hybrid of tech and face-to-face. I glimpsed this future at DigitalNow, April 6-9 in Orlando, and the future of conference interactivity is mobile. Ticketed as “The Many Faces of Mobile,” the event embraced mobile as more than a theme; it was part of the meeting’s design, and it was done with aplomb. Contrary to the typical make-sure-your-cell-phones-are-turned-off announcement, DigitalNow organizers stood up at the opening general session and said, “Get out your smart phones, get out your tablets, turn them on and turn them up! We want to hear you using them.” We did and the experience was one-of-a-kind—a model for the modern meeting. The amazing thing: It wasn’t a distraction. As presenters told their stories, delegates told a different, but related, narrative via their mobile devices. We affected the meeting’s design—it was our event, and we loved it. Some of us were on smart phones of various makes and models, some on tablets and some on both—just about everyone using their mobile devices to affect and customize their conference experiences. Tweeting, texting, posting photos and videos, blogp ging, connecting with other attendees and communicating with conference organizers—the experico ence was more than just sitting and listening, it was th a chance to really get involved. reall There is a lesson here for everyone in the meeting less and event industry: If you aren’t already integrating industr mobile into your events, you’re behind the times. And if you don’t start soon, you’ll be A left in the dust.
