by meals and a two-hour block of lightening talks all followed by a showcase of the resultant projects and websites. Some developers worked upwards of 40 hours straight for their chosen nonprofit groups. Others collaborated with each other on joint developments. “The event really opened up some amazing avenues for our arts groups,” Coldicutt says. “When the new government stepped in [May 2010], it lowered prioritization for the arts, which means we must be more collaborative than ever before and gain value from what other people outside our world are accomplishing.” Success is found in the data. Ninety percent of attendees said they would come to a future event; #chd11 was a trending topic in London on Twitter; a Northern Ireland event is en route. And Coldicutt has decided to sacrifice her position at the Royal Opera to focus on hack days and other related projects full-time. She plans to play off the original event and host short, afternoon discussions on creative energy and new ways of thinking as well as two-day hacks around the world. All of the planning guidelines for these events will be available to anyone under a Creative Commons license, which means the content can be copied, distributed, edited, remixed and built on. Coldicutt just asks anyone who holds similar events to register and share them with the international community. “We’re creating energy and buzz,” she says. “And loads of people gave their time and experiences for free to help out causes in need. Lots of the people who met at Culture Hack Day are still working with each other today. Now, we have the energy and the network to push this movement forward.” –J.S. mpiweb.org 39 http://www.mpiweb.org
