YOUR COMMUNITY Future Leaders Meet in Valparaíso Students in the international meeting industry convened in Valparaíso, Chile, earlier this year at the COCAL Congress (Federation of Organizing and Allied Conference for Latin America and the Caribbean) for the IMEX-MPI Future Leaders Forum, which offers talented students the chance to gain unrivalled insight into how to build a successful events career. “We are investing in the future,” said Carina Bauer, CEO of the IMEX Group. “The forum effectively assists up-and-coming meeting and event organizers in developing their talents and enhancing their understandings of the market, so that they are equipped with the knowledge needed to one day lead the industry. Proof of this is the fact that the forums have now become hunting grounds for savvy employers who want to snap up the best students at the very start of their careers.” Students attended specialized presentations from leading meeting industry professionals who discussed their personal experiences and offered advice on how to build a successful career. Presenters included Arnaldo Nardone, marketing and convention director for the Radisson Hotel and Conference Centre Montevideo and president of the International Congress and Convention Association; Maria Jose Alvez, manager of Latin America for the ICCA; and Julio Urban, director of Idealiza Eventos in Sao Paulo. In addition to this event, IMEX - MPI Future Leaders Forums take place throughout the year. More than 4,000 students have passed through the program since its launch in 2003, and 90 percent have said that they were more likely to enter the industry as a result. Upcoming forums will be held July 23-26 at WEC in Orlando and Oct. 12-13 at IMEX America in Las Vegas. Visit www.imex-frankfurt.com for information on how to apply. On Demand Want easy access to the industry’s best online education library? Look no further. Last month, MPI launched its Professional Development On Demand portal, which offers CEU-eligible content at a glance. Each element provides CEU value to event professionals who are preparing for CMP cert or re-cert, and can be accessed on desktops, Webenabled smart phones and tablet devices. 90 one+ 05.11 > Green Hotel Meetings KEY GREENINGS From 12-exec board meeting to 10,000-delegate MEET conference, planners of all event sizes will soon have a tool that helps them find eco-friendly accommodation. The Hotel Association of Canada and the MPI Foundation Canada have announced the launch of the Green Key Meetings Program, designed to provide planners with a ranking system for hotel environmental commitments. “The Green Key Meetings Program will become an important part of the hospitality industry’s efforts to protect and preserve the environment,” said Anthony Pollard, president of the Hotel Association of Canada. “Working with MPI will ensure our sustainability requirements will be realized well into the future.” The program evaluates a hotel’s meeting and convention operations on a scale of one (lowest) to five (highest). Results are based on an evaluation of each hotel’s sustainability efforts. Upon completion of the Green Key Meetings assessment, the property is awarded a ranking and is listed on Greenkeymeetings.com. Scholarships Make the Grade Ready to jumpstart your career in meeting and event management? The goal: to provide for a prosperous industry in the future by educating the leaders of tomorrow. One student each year will win a scholarship worth US$50,000 through 2013. http://www.imex-frankfurt.com http://www.Greenkeymeetings.com
