Rosen Backs MPIF Scholarship Rosen Hotels & Resorts has partnered with the MPI Foundation to provide three four-year scholarships to students who plan to attend the University of Central Florida and major in hospitality, events, restaurant or foodservice management. Applications are due June 17. Email Lynette Smith at lsmith@mpiweb.org, or read the full story on Page 87. Rose herself felt to create a service project that would serve a local community and leave participants with that well-accomplished glow of do-goodery. Feeling overwhelmed at the prospect of allocating serious time she didn’t have to a service project (or the crushing thought of not doing one at all), Rose went about her early site visits for Informatica’s 2012 winter sales conference—which is when she met Leslie Menichini, vice president of sales for Rosen Hotels & Resorts in Orlando. “We walked the property and discussed terms, the usual, food and beverage, room rates, transportation,” Rose recalls. “And then she asked what my corporate social responsibility needs were, what kind of community service project we wanted to do, as if it was as natural a part of an event as feeding delegates or ordering audiovisual.” Rose had stumbled upon the community-based culture hotelier Harris Rosen infused in his brand decades ago, an activism with one main focus—the Tangelo Park neighborhood, which sits just a quarter mile from the International Drive tourist area. Menichini listed the options: construct park benches and rocking chairs, build school shelves and stock them with books, create outdoor planters for elementary science projects, customdesign teddy bears for students, plant trees. Rosen has made significant contributions to Tangelo since 1993, including funding pre-school opportunities for every area 2 to 4 year old; parenting classes and vocational or technical opportunities for parents with children in school; and full tuition, room, board and living expenses for every Tangelo Park high school graduate who is accepted by a vocational school, community college or public university in the state of Florida. Menichini says the Rosen Rewards project is the hotel’s version of other brand loyalty programs, only these rewards go to the local community. Participants earn a different kind of satisfaction—one that comes from helping people in need. “We have been raised in such a different culture here,” 36 one+ 06.11
