The event and the model it inspires connect people who honor the web of life, each other and future generations by enlisting the principles of nature. Take Seeds of Change. One of the greatest challenges to the food supply is an overall lack of seed diversity—and one of nature’s fundamental lessons: diversify. (Your investment banker would do well to study ecology.) So, Ausubel co-founded the company to restore “backyard biodiversity” through a market partnership with home gardeners. It was about the time Ausubel coined the term bioneer that Seeds of Change investor and friend Josh Mailman suggested a conference to connect people with nature’s way-based solutions. “It sounded kind of boring to me,” Ausubel says. “I’d never even been to a conference before.” But Mailman offered US$10,000 seed money and 250 people showed to discuss solutions and connect. The vibe was electric, and most importantly, triggered empowerment and created hope. Ausubel brought his passion for environment-led change; Simons brought a history in theater production. “It was tremendously beneficial that we each brought our own kind of ‘beginner’s mind’ to co-creating the event, as we didn’t have conventions to jet- tison, but were able to imagine and design an event that we felt would have the greatest creative capacity to ignite and catalyze change,” Simons reflects. And, as Ausubel says, nature’s favorite forms of organization are networks, which primary function as communication tools. He and Simons were simply growing their own. Today, the primary conference site is San Rafael, California, where 3,000 experts gather to share their stories. But, on the advice of Toronto-based urban life expert Mary Rowe, Bioneers went high-tech 11 years ago with a satellite feed to locations in five cities, where delegates downloaded content and self-organized their 34 one+ 07.11
